[Nell] New Year, Fresh Start, Changed Preference in Polishes

Years change, seasons change, people change and after writing my thesis it took me a while to get my life back on track and get back to find pleasure in sitting down and writing again. But here we are. The ‘NailFile’ is back in business for my part.

Since we last read each other I completed my thesis, changed jobs and universities, survived christmas (don’t ask me how) and had my life uprooted again by a sudden death in the family. A lot of things changed fundamentally amongst them my perception of myself, I have moments when I actually feel like a grown up (shocker!) but let’s return to the central topic of this blog: Nailpolish!

I used to love my bright flashy polishes, the more brain scrambling and eye melting the better and don’t get me wrong I still love my duochromes and holo polishes but on a day to day basis I find myself reaching for the ‘un-colors’: nudes, blackened and greyed muted creme finishes.

One of my current favorites is Catrice Time for Lovender a beautiful greyed mauve purple. I’m not sure how it compares to Chanel Tenderly but it seems to be in the same vein. It was basically opaque in one coat with a little care but I never feel right doing just one coat so I did two just to be sure. The brush was great on this one but it doesn’t seem to have been the new one yet. I finished it off with a thick coat of the Lacura Gloss Topper and that was that. I really like how it turned out.

What hasn’t changed though, is my preference for wide brushes, gel top coats and polishes that are opaque in two coats. From the picture you can see that I reach for my higher end polishes more. Quite possibly because I have more colors that appeal to me right now from them but there is also the factor of feeling rather put together and even a little bit luxurious wearing the more expensive polishes, even though I know how silly that is. Most people won’t even register the fact that I am wearing nail polish at all, I guess.

This doesn’t mean that I am only going to wear and purchase upscale polishes from here on out but I definitely have developed a weakness for essie especially (if you follow me on instagram you will have seen my essie challenge month in December, where I wore only essie up till christmas, I might do a review post for the blog on that).

As things stand right now, I’m trying to get my life back on track and that includes blogging regularly, as you can tell from this post I am a bit rusty but it’ll get better.

Nell’s General Update

Ugh jeez, I just can’t seem to make things work at the moment, so instead of giving you a couple of little posts I thought I would update you on my life right now, and keep a couple of promises I made, so here we go:

1. Germany Manis

I promised those for the week end and then got swallowed by exam craze, so here is what I wore over the last three games:

This already made a cameo in my June Faves if I remember correctly and it is OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls with a Flormar nail art polish in red on top and some black fine sharpie. I wore this for the USA game and I was surprised how much I liked it, next time I’ll have to try to use two different reds though, because the red v on our jerseys has a slight gradient to it.

For the Algeria and France games I wore this

It is my red, black and gold polishes, the same ones as in the last Germany mani installment plus Catrice Holo Manolo on thumb and pinkie. And supersticious me will paint this exact mani again tonight, because we won both of those games and the France game wasn’t all that bad.

2. Buying Ban
I realized recently that I buy way too many polishes, wear them once and then never think of them again. Pretty wasteful. So my plan for the near future is to really reduce me collection even if it hurts and only buy very very selectively , as in polishes that have something truly special about them. I don’t need all those, they are weighing me down and I really would love to just finish a color polish (not black because that I will finish anyway). Let’s face it when you are in the nailpolish biz long enough you mostly run into repetitions of polishes you already have or ones that are only a shade or two different. They will continue to tempt me but I hope I can stay strong. What about indies? None of those either! I really need to sort out my priorities first before I go back to buying polishes.

3. Anything else?

I am currently in the process of re-organizing my life (you can follow that process on my personal blog if you like). I realized I need a plan that I can tick off for everyday or I will continue to swim through my life instead of getting a safe footing again. Of course this blog will be featured in the plans as well, I don’t want to mess this up again. I may go back to posting NotD’s from my phone, this way I hope they won’t build up like they did recently, instead I am getting them out right away.
Also I moved my polish collection into my IKEA Helmer and it is using up about 1.5 drawers, major wake up call that I tell you! The Helmer is great for storing polishes, even the taller ones like OPI fit in perfectly.

This is it for now. I will schedule the next NotD, also there is a nail haul in our shared future (the last one for a while, hopefully) and then I am off to get back to studying!

Read y’all soon!
